Saiba Cryptomancer
Backup hands a +1/+1 counter to whatever you point at, but the counter is the least interesting thing this Ninja does. The real payload is the ability it lends, which fires only when the target is another creature: aim the trigger at itself and you keep the hexproof it already carries natively, growing into a 1/2 that protects its own skin but shares nothing. Point it outward and it becomes a protection spell wearing a creature's face. Held at instant speed on the strength of its flash, it drops in response to targeted removal and grants hexproof to the piece under threat, invalidating the very targeting the opponent has already paid for and leaving their spell with no legal object. That is the design: it lives in the narrow window between a target being declared and the spell resolving, a window most backup creatures never touch because they are built to enter and buff, not to react. Hexproof is the sharpest ability to hand off in that window, since it does not blunt the removal so much as strand it. A two-mana body that asks only to be left up, it works as a counterspell for creatures that happens to leave a chump blocker on the board once the dust settles.
