Sage of Shaila's Claim

Creature — Elf Druid1 generic manaGreen mana

Three energy stapled to a body that fits the early curve, and a price the mechanic almost never charged this cleanly. Most energy sources of this era buried their counters behind a condition: a death trigger, an attack, a sacrifice. Here the payment is just casting a 2/1, which is what a green deck wants to be doing on the second turn anyway. The body is incidental in the way a mana dork's is incidental: nobody runs an Elf Druid for its combat math. What the card is for is front-loading a fuel reserve, and because energy banks until you spend it, landing three counters the instant a creature enters converts a tempo-neutral play into a deferred payoff. The Elf Druid line is a quiet flavor note, too: a druid who taps the land's claim for power rather than mana, which is what energy always was under the hood, a manabase that lived off to the side of the colored-mana economy. Where it slots, what it powers, and whether the reserve earns its card all depend on the engine around it, but as a delivery vehicle the design is honest: pay two, get a creature, bank three.
