Sacred Rites

InstantWhite mana

What you discard, your team absorbs into toughness. That's the trade Sacred Rites offers, and it's a strange one: a fog-adjacent combat blanket that asks you to empty your hand to pay for it. The math only ever moves one stat (toughness, never power), which restricts the card to defense: it saves creatures from burn and from combat by the count of cards you're willing to bury, but it never turns a stalled board into pressure. The deeper logic is Odyssey's: this was a block built on filling the graveyard, where pitching cards was a resource conversion rather than a sacrifice, feeding threshold and flashback engines downstream. Read in that light, the discard clause stops looking like pure cost and starts looking like enablement, with the toughness boost as the rider that makes the pitch instant-speed and free of a separate enabler. The honest read is that the survival math rarely justifies the cards spent at parity, which is why the card mostly mattered to decks that wanted to discard anyway and were happy to get a defensive trick stapled to the act.
