Sacred Prey

Creature — HorseGreen mana

The reward here runs backwards from how creatures usually want to attack. Most one-drops want to connect; this Horse wants to be stopped, paying you a point of life every time a defender steps in front of it. That inversion is both the design's wit and its flaw at once: an ability that fires precisely when the body fails to deal damage. It comes from an early-era run of one-mana green creatures that each triggered off a different combat outcome, an experiment in attaching value to states the attacker doesn't control. The trouble is the trigger rewards the wrong incentive. An opponent who reads the board correctly simply declines to block and takes the lone point of damage, leaving the ability inert; the life only flows when blocking was already the play they wanted. So the card pays out most against opponents who are winning the race anyway, and stays silent against the ones who aren't. It demonstrates why combat-trigger creatures need their trigger to align with the attacker's goal rather than fight it, a lesson later attacking-matters designs absorbed by rewarding the swing itself instead of the block. What survives is a tidy teaching example: an effect that reads coherently on the page and plays sideways at the table, documenting an era willing to print exactly that.
