Rush of Ice

Awaken exists to give cheap spells a late-game ceiling, and this carries the leanest possible demonstration of the idea: a one-mana tempo trick that, with enough mana behind it, doubles as a creature-maker. Cast for a single blue, it is a one-target tap-down that buys a turn by skipping the creature's next untap step, a soft split of Frost Breath narrowed to a single body. Whether that minor disruption earns a card on its own is a thin proposition. The awaken cost is the second life: pay and the same tap effect arrives stapled to a 3/3 land with haste, a body that can attack the turn it lands. That is the structural appeal of awaken as a mechanic, a single card that bends from early interaction to an immediate threat without rotting in hand, and this is the skeleton version of that bend. The tension is that neither half pulls much weight. The tap is small, and the awakened creature, haste and all, is still just a creature: a Wrath of God or any "destroy all creatures" sweep kills it outright, and being a land underneath saves it from nothing. Five mana for a hasty 3/3 plus a one-turn delay is a poor rate on its own. Reduced to its bones like this, the card is more instructive for understanding what the keyword was built to do than satisfying for what it actually accomplishes.
