Ruby Leech

Creature — Leech1 generic manaRed mana

A 2/2 first striker for two mana is a clean, aggressive body, the kind of beater mono-red wants on turn two. The second line is where the design turns on itself: every red spell you cast afterward costs an extra red, which means the deck most desperate for a cheap first striker is the deck this card sabotages. Stack it next to a curve of one- and two-mana burn and the whole hand seizes up. The tension is deliberate. This is a creature priced like an aggressive two-drop but balanced as if the rest of your red cards were collateral. Its honest home is a build that runs few enough red spells that the tax rarely bites: a light red splash, or a deck leaning on artifacts, lands, and off-color threats that only ever wants the first-striking body and nothing else from its red. It belongs to a multicolor-era ethos, a red creature that quietly asks you not to be too red. The result is a gap between who craves the stats and who can stomach the cost: the aggressive shells that want the first striker cannot afford the surcharge, and the controlling shells that can shrug it off rarely have use for a first-striking two-drop on the floor. That mismatch between demand and tolerance is the whole of the card's character.
