Trample on a body big enough to brawl with anything its era could put across the table: that is the entire pitch, and in green's early years it was a complete one. Seven mana bought you six power that punched through chump blockers and a frame that survived most combat it walked into, no card advantage attached, no enters-the-battlefield trigger, no recursion. The keyword is the only text, and it does exactly the work green wanted from its expensive creatures before the color learned to demand more from the slot. This is a baseline against which later green seven-drops were quietly improved: every Wurm and beast that arrived with a comparable body but added card draw, ramp, or evasion stapled on was answering the question of why you would pay this much for combat damage and nothing else. As a snapshot of an era's curve-topper, it is honest about what it is and what it costs.
