Soft removal with a cantrip stapled on and a sacrifice button, which is a lot of design bolted to an effect that was never quite constructed-playable on its own. The core is a tempo play: freeze a creature through its controller's next untap step and replace itself, so the swing costs you no card. Being a sorcery fences the effect out of combat entirely; you are not ambushing a blocker or blanking an attack, you are proactively locking a creature down on your own turn before combat happens, most often to strip a defender or keep an opposing engine offline for a beat. The draw is what lifts it past a bare tap effect, turning a purely positional play into one that keeps your hand stocked while you buy the turn. Casualty is where it becomes something to build around: feed it any small attacker and the copy taps a second target and draws a second card, with a free retarget so you can lock down two creatures at once while replacing the body you spent. The tension is that casualty wants a board generating expendable creatures and a reason to sacrifice one; unfed, it is a modest cantripping tempo card, but fed, it converts a spare token into a doubled effect that stalls a pair of threats before they ever swing.
