River of Tears

Land

The dual land that punishes the most natural play pattern in the game: playing a land. Most fixing in this color pair leans on a drawback you can play around, but this one inverts the usual rhythm of a turn. Lead with the land drop and you get black; hold the land and you get blue, which means the card forces a choice between developing your mana and casting the spell you actually want. The cruel part is that the condition does not care about order in the obvious way: drop your land first and every River of Tears you tap that turn produces black, regardless of what you needed. The design reads like an exercise in making untapped dual fixing that still hurts, and it lands on a drawback most other dual lands never bothered to model, because it taxes the one action a deck is least willing to skip. It rewards a hand that can sequence its land for last, or a deck that wanted black on land-drop turns and blue otherwise anyway, which is a narrower window than the painless duals occupy but a real one. The friction lives in the sequencing rather than the life total or a tapped state, and that makes it a tuning knob rather than a clean two-color source: useful precisely when your curve and your land drops happen to align with which color you need on which turn.
