Rite of Passage

Enchantment2 generic manaGreen mana

The clause carrying the whole apparatus is the parenthetical: the creature must survive the damage before it earns its counter. That single qualifier turns what reads like a fight-back engine into a sequencing problem. Throw a creature into combat at parity and it dies before the counter ever lands; raise its toughness first, or pick fights it clearly wins, and every wound it absorbs makes it permanently larger. The trigger keys on the event, not the magnitude: a creature dealt five damage by one source gets exactly one counter, not five, so the engine favors a body that gets pricked repeatedly and lives far more than one that swallows a single big hit. That is why high-toughness creatures and pingers have always been its natural shells, and why burn that overshoots into lethal chunks does nothing for it.

The tension is between greed and survivability, and the card refuses to resolve it on your behalf. It wants creatures that block, endure, and grow into something that no longer needs to block. Note the limit on the obvious cheat: damage prevention stops the damage from being dealt at all, so a prevented hit fails the condition and yields no counter. The growth comes from surviving real damage, not from dodging it. This is an early-era build-around in the oldest sense, a static engine that pays off only the deck constructed to respect its one hard rule.
