Rimebound Dead

Snow Creature — SkeletonBlack mana

Regenerating skeletons go back to the game's earliest sets, where a recurring black blocker that paid a single mana to survive combat was the original speed bump. What sets this one apart is the resource it pays with: snow mana, which only exists if your lands and rocks are themselves snow permanents. Drudge Skeletons never asked anything of your manabase; its regeneration was always available for a plain black. This 1/1 quietly demands that you commit to a snow-heavy build before it becomes the recurring wall it wants to be. That coupling is the whole design logic of the snow archetype it comes from: each card reads cheap and unremarkable in isolation, and the cost of admission is a deck whose sources produce the snow mana to fuel them all. Without snow sources it is a vanilla one-drop with a dead activated ability; supply them and you have an early blocker that holds the ground indefinitely against any attacker lacking trample or evasion, regardless of its power, since regeneration replaces the destruction rather than mitigating the damage. The skeleton template is doing exactly what it always has (trading a recurring mana payment for permanence on the battlefield), but the snow tax reframes that permanence as a payoff rather than a default, a small gear in a build whose whole power level hinges on how committed its mana is.
