Righteousness

InstantWhite mana

A pure-combat trick from the era when white's identity was being drawn in its sharpest, most literal strokes: the card only works on a creature that is blocking. The +7/+7 is enormous, a swing big enough to kill anything the attacker could realistically have sent in, but the restriction to a blocking creature locks the card to a single phase of a single kind of turn. You cannot pump your own attacker with it, cannot use it outside combat, cannot even use it on a creature that has not yet been declared as a blocker. What the card encodes is a thesis statement about what white was, in 1993, allowed to do at one mana: defend, decisively, and only defend. Later combat tricks in the color loosened every one of those constraints in turn, trading raw size for flexibility in target, timing, or tempo. Righteousness is the unreconstructed original: maximum power band, minimum window of use, and a target restriction so narrow it functions almost as a templating curiosity. Studied against any modern pump spell, it explains by contrast why the contemporary combat trick looks the way it does: the constraints Wizards later relaxed are exactly the ones drawn at their tightest here.
