Each activation costs a white mana plus two life and prevents a single instance of damage from one source, so against a wide board or a burn-heavy clock you are paying two life to stop two damage, breaking even at best and falling behind whenever the prevented hit was smaller than the toll. The card only profits against a single large source: a fattened attacker, a Fireball pointed at your face, one big swing you can fully negate by paying a fraction of what it would have dealt. That narrow window is the whole pitch. It belongs to the mid-90s school of white prevention magic, alongside cards like Story Circle and the various CircleS of Protection, where the design idea was that white should be able to buy time indefinitely against a chosen threat. The mechanism here is more honest about its cost than those Circles are: they prevented for free and read as oppressive, while Righteous Aura demands a steady life payment that prices the player out of the lock long before it becomes a soft-lock. The result is an enchantment that reads like a fortress and plays like a hedge, useful only when the math of one big source happens to fall your way.
