Rewards of Diversity

Enchantment2 generic manaWhite mana

Hatebear logic without a body: a triggered enchantment that gains you four life every time the opponent reaches for a gold card. The flaw lives in the premise. A card that only fires when an opponent casts something multicolored does nothing against the mono-colored and colorless decks that share its era, and four life per gold spell rarely outpaces what those spells actually do to you. Worse, the trigger is on the opponent's schedule, not yours: lifegain that depends entirely on enemy choices is lifegain you cannot time around a threat, and an opponent who sees the enchantment can simply prioritize mono-colored or colorless spells from their pool to switch it off. What it represents is more interesting than what it does. It sits among the early reactive enchantments that read the opposing deck's composition, the same instinct behind cards keying off Islands or artifacts. Here the category being punished is multicolor itself, a class of card that only became worth hating once a wave of gold-card design sold players on its appeal. So the card lands as a quiet structural counterweight to the thing its surrounding cards were built to celebrate: for every splashy multicolored bomb of the period, there was a white enchantment offering a few life for the privilege of facing it, and not nearly enough of them to matter.
