Card selection at instant speed, with the lifegain calibrated to push you toward the most expensive card on top. Most dig-three-pick-one effects of its era ran at sorcery speed and stayed color-fixed; doing this kind of digging in response to a fetch land cracking or before your draw step is what lifts it above a plain draw spell. The lifegain rider scales with what you keep, so the card quietly nudges you to grab your bomb over your land drop: take the four-drop and bank four life, or take the cantrip and get almost nothing. That tension between card quality and incidental life is the whole design, and it sits awkwardly against the cost of milling the other two cards into your graveyard. A control deck that does not mind feeding its own bin (and might even want certain things there) treats the digging as upside layered on upside; if your library needs to stay intact, paying four mana to bury two cards is a real cost, not a free filter. It reads as a value engine and plays as a deckbuilding question: how much are you willing to throw away to find the one card you need at the exact moment you need it.
