Cast for its evoke cost of , it is a creature spell that immediately sacrifices itself once it resolves, then fires its return to pull up to two small creatures back from the graveyard: the sacrifice is the price of the recursion, not a downside to dodge. Because it is a creature on the stack either way, it answers to counterspells and feeds enters-the-battlefield triggers that a sorcery-shaped recursion spell would not. Pair it with a sacrifice outlet and a second recursion piece and the loop closes on itself, which is why it anchored blink-and-sacrifice combo for a generation of constructed play. The power-2-or-less restriction is what holds the engine in fair territory: it rebuilds a board of mana dorks, hatebears, and aristocrat fodder, but it cannot drag a fat threat back into play, so the value runs wide rather than tall. Hard-cast at five mana, it is a fragile 4/3 flier whose payoff only arrives once it is gone; evoked, it is a one-shot reanimation effect that rewards a graveyard worth dipping into. White's recursion has always leaned on this template, a creature that returns the small things it can afford to return, and few examples state the idea this cleanly.
