Regrowth for creatures has always been priced above what a single card back deserves, which is why black rarely gets it clean. The trick this design runs is scaling the payoff to your commitment: the first mode is a plain, slightly overcosted single-creature retrieval, unremarkable on its own, while the second mode pays two cards back for the price of matching a creature type across the pair. That tribal clause is the whole calculus. It turns a mediocre recursion spell into genuine card advantage the moment your graveyard holds two Goblins, two Zombies, two Elves, or two of anything sharing a type, the sort of graveyard a synergy deck accumulates by attrition. The design is aimed squarely at go-wide creature strategies that grind, where losing three or four small bodies to a sweeper is the norm and refilling two of them for two mana rebuilds the board faster than the opponent can clear it again. Note the requirement is a shared type, not a shared name, so a rebuy can pull two different creatures as long as their type lines overlap, which quietly rewards decks that lean hard on one tribe. It is a modest card by rate, but the second mode is the reason it exists: black's answer to the recurring problem of tribal decks that empty their hand and need a way to reload without paying full retail twice.
