The floor is a free shield: at no additional cost, a single permanent gains hexproof and indestructible until end of turn, which is enough to snap a targeted removal spell in half. Pay one more and the same shield comes stapled to three life; pay the full escalation and the coverage widens to your entire board with six life attached, converting a one-shot save into a proper Fog against burn and destruction-based sweepers. The design principle underneath is that protection should scale linearly with investment, and the decision stays deferred until an opponent commits: hold up the pip, learn what the threat is, then pick the tier that answers it. Granting hexproof and indestructible in tandem is what makes the shield comprehensive, closing off targeted removal, direct damage, and destruction in one window. The honest gap is edicts and sacrifice effects, which route through the player rather than the permanent and step past indestructible entirely; no tier here answers a "sacrifice a creature" line. That limitation aside, the tension the card lives inside is entirely tempo: on the turns nothing threatens you, the mana sits unspent, and the reactive escalation reshapes an exchange only when an opponent forces the issue.
