How this card plays

7 reviews

The flash rewind reads like a control finisher: a 4/3 that resets a board while threatening to end the game. The "entered this turn" clause is the load-bearing piece. Renet, Temporal Apprentice punishes the player who just tapped out for a planeswalker, scoops the reanimation target whose trigger has already fired, and bounces the token board that resolved a moment ago, all without targeting, which sidesteps ward and hexproof. That no-target profile is the distinction from Venser, Shaper Savant: she rewinds the protected thing rather than fizzling against it.

The right shell is a flash-leaning blue control commander that wants to hold up its full mana on an opponent's turn. Talrand, Sky Summoner and similar reactive builds drop her on a developed player's end step, ideally the turn after one opponent overextends. The timing is the whole card, and the five-mana cost (3 generic manaBlue manaBlue mana) is the price of admission. She is too expensive to run as a counterspell substitute, so she earns her keep as a punisher rather than a tempo trade.

The restriction caps the upside, and the multiplayer math is unforgiving. She catches only what entered this turn, so in practice she hits the active player and almost no one else; the "three-player rewind" fantasy never materializes. Flickering her with Brago, King Eternal re-resolves the trigger on your own turn, bouncing only what you developed, and doubling it with Yarok, the Desecrated just stacks the same near-empty bounce twice.

She is a poor fit where the deck commits early. Atraxa, Praetors' Voice and proactive midrange commanders never want to sit on five open mana, and the symmetry clause would scoop their own fresh board. This is a Bracket 3-4 card, sub-$10 in the right control shell. The timing discipline is too demanding for a casual table that taps out on its own turn.
