Remember the Fallen

The modal split is the whole pitch: most regrowth-style effects in white commit to a single card type, but this one offers creature recovery and artifact recovery from one casting, and lets you take both if your graveyard can supply both kinds of target. The two modes are distinct, though: one returns a creature, the other an artifact, so the ceiling is one of each rather than a doubled-up pair. White's relationship to the graveyard has always been guarded, leaning on recursion of small things rather than open reanimation, and the "choose one or both" structure threads that needle: a single card retrieves a fallen blocker and a broken Equipment without ever crossing into the kind of mass return white is not allowed to do. The cost is paying full retail to put cards back in hand rather than onto the battlefield, which keeps the effect honest in a way reanimation never is: you still have to recast whatever you reclaim. That hand-return clause is also what makes the both-modes line worth the trouble, since retrieving a creature and an artifact together is two cards of advantage off one sorcery, a rate that justifies the rigid sorcery-speed timing and the requirement that the targets already sit in the yard. It is built for grindy white decks that expect to trade away permanents and want the specific losses that hurt most back.
