A plain tap effect resets on the following untap step; the stun counter turns that single tap into a lost untap, so the disabled attacker or blocker sits idle across a full rotation rather than one combat. That prolonged lockdown is the payoff, and convoke is how a go-wide blue deck funds the trigger without spending mana on it. Tapping creatures whose combat is already spent converts the entry effect into cheap disruption, folding a crowded battlefield into a targeted strike. The obvious tension is that convoke and blocking compete for the same bodies: every creature tapped to help cast this is a creature that cannot block, and vigilance only exempts this homunculus from tapping when it attacks, not when it is lent to a later cast. So the card wants the board already developed on arrival, when there are untapped bodies to convoke with rather than defenders you still need. Blue rarely gets to strand an enemy creature this cheaply, and the counter is what stretches a one-shot tap into lasting board influence. This is a cog in a token-heavy blue shell rather than a centerpiece: it turns deployed bodies into removal, but only when the tempo of its arrival lines up with a board that can afford to fund it.
