Red Ward

Enchantment — AuraWhite mana

The protection-aura cycle from Alpha is one of the oldest design templates in the game: a one-mana white enchantment that hands its target a hard, color-specific shield against a single color of the wheel. The rider that catches the eye, the clause noting the aura survives its own grant of protection, does nothing on this particular member. Protection from red only stops red objects from enchanting or affecting the creature, and a white aura was never at risk of falling off. The clause exists because Wizards templated the whole cycle uniformly, and it only earns its keep on the sibling that grants protection from white, where the aura would otherwise threaten its own existence. That redundancy is a small record of how the game's early wording grew: a cycle gets one template, and the template carries language that matters on some members and idles on others. Mechanically it is a narrow hoser from an era when color-hate was the primary axis of disruption and sideboarding was a new idea. Its lineage runs through every later iteration of the effect, from the broader protection-granting designs that followed to the modern keyword-counter cards that hand out protection as a one-shot rather than a sticky aura. It captures how white's defensive toolkit was first imagined: cheap, conditional, and pointed at exactly one enemy.
