SorceryBlue mana

The set that introduced artifact-matters as a Magic theme also introduced its accountant. One blue mana, sorcery speed, any artifact card from your graveyard back to your hand: the rate is unremarkable until you remember the design context, which is a world where artifacts were the primary engine pieces and graveyard recursion in blue was a novel idea rather than a settled color-pie reading. The card is the structural pair to the era's artifact sacrifice outlets and damage-based removal: if your Su-Chi or your Triskelion died, you wanted a way back, and blue (the color that already cared about artifacts mechanically) was the natural home for the cleanup. Functionally identical reprints and near-reprints have followed for thirty years, each tuned to the format they were printed into: Argivian Restoration, Hammer Mage's circle of effects, the various artifact-specific Regrowths. None of them have meaningfully improved the rate, because the rate was already correct. What dates the card is not the cost but the assumption underneath it: that artifact decks would want a blue splash to recover their pieces, rather than running mono-artifact recursion in their own colors. The modern color pie has since pulled artifact recursion into white and black as well, but the template Reconstruction set (cheap, single-target, sorcery-speed, hand not battlefield) is still the default shape the effect takes.
