Reaping the Rewards

InstantWhite mana

Buyback was Tempest block's experiment in spells you never run out of: pay an inflated cost and the card returns to your hand instead of the graveyard, so a single copy becomes a repeatable engine. Most of the cycle leaned on that loop to do something meaningful, a Capsize lock or a recurring burn drip. This one shows what happens when the engine is bolted to an effect that barely justifies casting once. Two life is a thin payoff for a white mana, and the buyback cost here is a sacrificed land, which means every repetition trades a permanent resource (your manabase) for an incremental one (life total). The loop is real but self-defeating: gaining two life again and again while shrinking the very lands that let you cast it is a clock running backward. It documents why buyback costs were tuned the way they were, with the additional cost meant to be a luxury you pay when ahead, not a treadmill that consumes your board. The card maps the outer boundary of the mechanic: a return clause attached to an effect too small to want returned, with a cost too painful to want paid twice.
