Reanimate

SorceryBlack mana

One mana and a chunk of your life total buys any creature anyone has put in any graveyard, and the genius is the pricing discipline. Where Animate Dead and Necromancy taxed reanimation with extra mana and ongoing-aura fragility, this version trades all of that for a flat life payment scaled to what you are returning. That single conversion, life into a body, is the whole engine and the whole danger: a small creature comes back nearly free, while a giant one costs a life total you have to be willing to spend down or recoup. The card never asks for fairness; it asks for a plan. The whole reanimator archetype is built on cheating that conversion, filling a graveyard with something whose mana value should never have been payable and then handing the bill to a life total that some other engine intends to refill. Decades of design has circled this idea (Exhume splits the cost both ways, Goryo's Vengeance hedges with a temporary clause, Persist exiles afterward), but none has matched the brutal economy of paying life and being done. It remains the template every later reanimation spell is measured against, the one that proved you could put a sorcery this powerful at a single black mana as long as the life total carries the weight.
