So the design choice that defines this card is not where the damage comes from but that the engine has been split across two colors at once. Direct damage to any target is squarely red's job; the repeatable, untap-step grind is blue's patience. The wrinkle is fusing them into one gold-cost body, asking a deck to plant a permanent and click the ability every turn rather than race. The 1/1 is the honest price for free, repeatable removal that costs no card and no mana once the creature resolves, and the activated tap ability hits at instant speed without ever entering combat: nothing bites back, because nothing is being attacked or blocked. What it leaves fragile is the body itself, a single point of toughness that the very ability is built to inflict, so any one-damage ping or the cheapest spot removal erases the engine before its clicks add up. The Merfolk Goblin type line is the curiosity collectors remember, an off-kilter creature-type mashup from an era built around stitching effects into enemy-color costs.
