A three-mana 2/2 with a static keyword and a repeatable activated ability carries a defensive job description, and the interesting thing is how cleanly the two pieces answer different problems. First strike is the combat tax: it wins the fight against anything its own size and survives the exchange with smaller attackers, so the body polices a wider band of the ground than its stats suggest. Regeneration is the removal-and-wrath tax: a repeatable green shield that buys the creature back from targeted destruction and lethal combat damage alike, keeping the first-striking blocker available across multiple turns rather than as a one-time speed bump. The mechanic matters precisely because it does not prevent damage. Against a larger attacker, the 2/2 deals its 2, takes the return damage, and would die, except the regeneration shield replaces that destruction: the creature is removed from combat and tapped, but it survives to block again next turn. That is the trade green wants here, turning a one-for-zero loss into a recurring standoff. Together they describe a role white-green of this era rarely handed to a small creature: stay on the battlefield and keep contesting combat, not race. The friction is the activation cost, competing with everything else green wants its mana for, and the fact that regeneration is dead against exile and sacrifice. What the card represents is a design instinct from a slower age of Magic: that a small creature could earn its slot by being durable and annoying rather than fast or large, grinding an opponent down by simply refusing to stay dead in combat.
