Rakalite

Artifact6 generic mana

Reusable damage prevention is the angle, and the design lever is the self-bounce clause that defines how the card actually plays. Where most prevention effects of the era were one-shot shields stapled to instants and sorceries, this one sits on the battlefield and prevents a single point of damage to any target for two mana, then returns to hand at the next end step. That bounce is the whole design: it cannot be stranded on the board by artifact removal between uses (you hold it in hand until you need it), but the recursion is not free. Because it leaves play every turn it fires, you re-pay the 6 generic mana casting cost each time you want it back online, on top of 2 generic mana per point prevented. The result is renewable but brutally expensive insurance: protecting a target across multiple turns means recasting a six-mana artifact again and again, point by point. The ability is targeted (it names any target receiving the damage), so a single copy can be pointed at whatever is being hit at a given moment, but never cheaply. It reads now as an artifact from the period when Wizards was still working out how to price recursion: a pay-recast-replay template built to refuse to stay gone without ever touching the graveyard, at a rate no one would seriously pay.
