A 5/3 flying blocker is punishing before you ever spend a mana: five power kills nearly anything that comes at it on the ground, and the flying lets it patrol the air against attackers the rest of your defense cannot reach. Defender simply means it stays home, which is the body's resting state, not a liability. What you actually pay red mana for is the second half of the card, a repeatable Lure-in-reverse that compels a single enemy creature to attack this turn. That is the part worth studying. Forcing one attacker pulls a would-be blocker out of position, marches a fragile threat into open removal-by-block, or simply drags a creature off the back row and into your 5/3's reach, where it dies for free. The clever inversion is that the compulsion points at the opponent's combat step rather than your own. This is the "must attack" clause, more often stapled to a curse or a one-shot enchantment, rebuilt as a creature ability you can fire every turn from behind a body that punishes whatever it forces forward. The body and the ability solve each other: a defender wants to sit and block, and the ability manufactures attackers for it to block. Forcing the other player's attacks is a quietly political effect, and pinning it to a recurring engine rather than a single spell is the design idea here.
