Quiet Speculation
A tutor that doesn't put anything in your hand: the cards land in the graveyard instead, which is precisely the point when those cards have flashback. This is the engine card that powered "Quietfire" or "Quiet Roar" style decks built around Roar of the Wurm, the eight-mana 6/6 token spell whose flashback cost is a far gentler four. Cast Quiet Speculation, dump three copies of Roar into your yard, and you've effectively traded two mana for a stack of large creatures payable on installment. The design tension it resolves is rate versus access: hard-casting Roar is prohibitive, but the flashback cost is reasonable, and the only missing piece was a way to put those cards in the graveyard quickly without drawing them. Quiet Speculation is that piece, and it taught a lesson Magic has returned to many times since: a flashback card has two costs, and a card that fills your graveyard with the cheaper one is the same kind of cheating that reanimation spells do, just laundered through a mechanic that was supposed to keep things fair. The "target player" clause even lets you point it at an opponent in stranger builds, though almost nobody ever did. It remains the cleanest demonstration of why a tutor's destination matters as much as its target.
