Quagmire

Enchantment2 generic manaBlack mana

A hoser printed sideways. Where most hate cards from this era attack a card type or a color outright, this one targets a single keyword: swampwalk, the evasion mechanic that Legends and its surrounding sets handed out generously to black creatures in a format where mono-black mirrors were common. The design is unusual for its restraint. It does not destroy the offending creatures, does not tax their controller, does not even remove the ability; it just turns off the "as though" clause that makes swampwalk uninterruptible, letting normal blocking rules resume. That narrowness is the whole point. Swampwalk was an answer-resistant evasion ability against the format's most-played basic, and the only clean fix was a parallel "as though" effect pointed back at it. The card belongs to a design philosophy that built specific locks for specific problems and then printed specific keys, rather than the broader, more flexible hate pieces that came later. It is also a quiet reminder of how seriously early Magic took landwalk as a threat: enough to spend a card slot, an enchantment frame, and three mana on a permanent that does nothing else.
