Creature — Snake1 generic manaBlack manaBlack mana

No rules text, no keyword, just a 3/2 body for 1 generic manaBlack manaBlack mana: this is a measuring stick for what black creatures cost in the mid-nineties. The interesting thing is what the price documents. Black paid for its power in toughness back then, and a 3/2 at three mana was an entirely standard rate at a time when efficient beaters were still being calibrated set by set. The double-black requirement is the only demand the card makes, and it makes it to keep the body honest in two-color decks rather than to enable anything. What the card represents now is the baseline that every later black two- and three-drop was built to beat: every Phyrexian Rager, every black body with an upside is, in effect, this with a reason to exist. The snake art and flavor lean into the obvious imagery, but there is no rules text bridging the picture to the game. This is a relic of a design philosophy in which a clean curve-filler did not need a second sentence to earn its slot, and it has aged into exactly the role it was printed for: a plain accounting of the cost of black power, with no upside attached to obscure the math.
