Pulsating Illusion

Creature — Illusion4 generic manaBlue mana

Where most of its contemporary block paid you for emptying your hand (spells climbing back out of the bin, discarded cards finding a second life on the way down, abilities switching on once enough cards had piled up), this one runs the math the other way. It asks you to pitch a card for nothing but a temporary +4/+4, converting cards in hand directly into combat damage with no echo afterward: no recursion, no payoff beyond the swing itself. The 0/1 base for a five-mana investment is the real price tag. By the time it resolves you have committed heavily to an evasive body that only earns its keep if you keep feeding it, and every card you fuel it with is a card spent for a single attack step rather than for anything else it might have done. Read in isolation it looks like a flyer with a discard button stapled on, but in an era fixated on what you stocked the graveyard with, the choice between fattening the yard and fattening your attacker is precisely the tension this kind of design was built to provoke. The once-per-turn clamp stops it from dumping your hand in a single alpha strike, so the honest ceiling is a 4/5 flyer that costs you a card per swing. It belongs to a moment when discard was a resource you spent at the table rather than a deck you assembled to abuse.
