Psychogenic Probe

Artifact2 generic mana

Shuffling a library is the most reflexive, invisible action in the game: fetchlands do it, library manipulation does it, tutors do it without a second thought. This artifact taxes the gesture itself, turning a bookkeeping step into a damage trigger. The genius and the limitation both live in the word "causes": it fires on the shuffle, not the search, so a player who cracks a fetch eats two damage whether they found their land or not. Against a deck built on tutoring and library shuffling, the clock adds up fast, and the victim often cannot stop paying without abandoning their game plan. What keeps it pinned to the margins is its indiscriminate reading of the table. Plenty of cards shuffle as part of their own effect, and whoever controls the Probe is just as exposed to its bite as the opponent, so it punishes its own library manipulation as readily as anyone else's. That symmetry, paired with the fact that the entire payoff depends on the opposing deck choosing to shuffle, is why it has always lived as a hate piece rather than a maindeck card: it is a wager that the deck across the table is built on the exact action it punishes. As a design artifact it is a small, sharp idea: find the most overlooked mechanical verb in Magic and attach a price to it.
