Psychic Transfer

Sorcery4 generic manaBlue mana

A life-swap effect with a self-imposed governor: the exchange only fires when the two life totals are already within five of each other, which strips out exactly the use case anyone would want. The fantasy of life-total swapping is the comeback, trading your single-digit total for an opponent's healthy one. This card forbids that. By the time the spell resolves and does anything, you are by definition close enough that the swap barely moves the needle, which makes it a peculiar piece of design: an effect whose own restriction negates the reason to play it. It reads as a deliberately defanged version of the swing-the-game life trade, the kind of cautious early-design hedging that shows up across this era, when Wizards was still learning where the dangerous numbers lived and built guardrails around effects they could not yet evaluate. The five-life clause is the tell. It is not a cost or a condition you build toward; it is a ceiling on the only situation where exchanging totals matters. The closest spiritual relative is the later, unbounded life-swap, which simply trades totals with no gate at all and is the card people actually reach for when they want this effect. What remains here is a historical curiosity: a clean demonstration of how a single qualifying clause can quietly remove a card from contention before it ever touches a battlefield.
