Prismatic Ward
A protection effect with a deckbuilding cost: you commit a card and two mana to declaring, in advance, which single color the enchanted creature will shrug off. That advance choice is the whole design tension. Protection from a color, the keyword Wizards eventually standardized, bundles damage prevention with can't-be-blocked, can't-be-targeted, and can't-be-enchanted-or-equipped clauses into one ability that resolves automatically. This Aura carves out only the damage-prevention slice of that package and asks you to lock the color in at resolution, before you know which threat you most need to blank. It guesses where protection knows. The result is a narrow, reactive piece of insurance: hard to misvalue in the abstract, easy to strand when the opponent's clock comes from a color you did not name. The era it comes from explains the shape. Early design leaned heavily on damage-prevention effects and color-keyed answers as the toolbox for surviving combat, and an Aura that turns off an entire color's burn or attackers reads as a clean, legible solution in that vocabulary. The same advance commitment that defined it is also its ceiling: protection-as-keyword does more for less, and instant-speed prevention spells answer the same problem without telegraphing your guess a turn early. As a study in how a single mechanic gets refined across editions, the gap between this Aura and the printed protection ability is the whole lesson.
