Primeval Force

Creature — Elemental2 generic manaGreen manaGreen manaGreen mana

Part of the "Force" cycle from Portal: five fatties, one per color, each priced cheaply on the premise that you can keep it by sacrificing three basics of the matching type, or else the creature dies on arrival. The design is a downpayment-and-balloon mortgage in a single card. Five mana puts an 8/8 on the table, a size that should cost far more, but the entry trigger demands you tear three Forests out of your own board to keep it. The math is deliberately punishing: you spend lands you already played, set yourself back on mana development, and end up with a body that does nothing but swing. Portal was built for new players and stripped of the interaction that defines competitive Magic, so this was the set's idea of a high-end threat: enormous, simple, and quietly self-correcting, because the green deck that can afford to sacrifice three Forests is usually the deck that no longer needs the body. What makes it more than a one-line beater is the cost structure itself, an early and unrefined sketch of the alternative-payment template: the "pay with permanents you control" axis before the developers learned how to dress that bargain as a choice rather than a tax. Here the trade is naked and unforgiving, the trigger doing the balancing work that later, more polished designs would soften into something a player might actually want to pay.
