Primal Plasma

Creature — Elemental Shapeshifter3 generic manaBlue mana

The choice happens once, when the creature enters, and then it is locked: a 3/3 beater, a 2/2 flier, or a 1/6 wall. That single decision is the whole design, and it is a genuinely elegant one because it folds three different roles into one card without ever letting you have more than one of them. You commit based on the board you are looking at, not the board you wish you had. The cleverness is in how the modes cover the cardinal axes a four-mana creature might want: raw stats for the ground, evasion for the air, or a brick that stonewalls almost anything an aggressive deck can throw at it. The 1/6 defender is the quiet star, a toughness number high enough to blank most early attackers and several burn spells, which is exactly the floor a control deck wants from a flexible body. None of the modes is exciting on its own; the card was never meant to be exciting on its own. It is built to be the right answer to whatever question the table is asking on turn four, an early experiment in stapling modality to a creature's enters-the-battlefield moment rather than to a spell. The line of shapeshifters that pick a stat profile on the way in traces back through this kind of design, and the appeal is the same now as then: one slot, three outs, decided at the moment it matters.
