Pitchburn Devils

The whole pitch is the death trigger as a fair-fight insurance policy. Five mana buys a 3/3 nobody wants to block on the cheap: trade it in combat and the blocker (or anything else) eats three damage on the way out, so the body is a deterrent first and a beater second. An opponent has to weigh whether killing it is worth handing you a free three-point burn, and the genuinely clean answers are the ones that avoid the death step entirely: bounce returns it to hand without a death, exile removes it without dying, a Pacifism-style effect just turns it off. Anything that actually kills it (combat, a damage spell, an edict that makes you sacrifice it) hands you the trigger, which is what removal costs against this card. The synergy axis is where the design earns a second look: the trigger fires on death from any source, including your own, so a sacrifice outlet lets you choose the target and the timing rather than waiting on the opponent to grant it. The trigger is a one-shot, though, so the Devils is a single piece of stapled-on burn you get to aim, not a recurring engine, unless a separate recursion effect brings the body back to die again. That tension, between a body priced as a roadblock and a single damage payoff priced into its dying, is the shape this kind of "dies to deal damage" creature has always traded on, and it scales with how much agency you can buy over when the dying happens.
