Phenax, God of Deception
The deity in this cycle who turns mill from a fringe win condition into a board-wide engine, and the only one whose granted ability rewrites a whole strategy rather than buffing one. The hinge is that the tap ability scales off toughness, not power, which rewards fat, defensive bodies that would otherwise sit idle on the attack: a Wall that contributes nothing to combat math becomes a recurring mill resource, and Phenax's own 7 toughness is the most efficient tap on the table. The deck-building axis tilts away from damage entirely toward how much toughness you can assemble and how many tap effects you can untap. Because the ability uses the tap symbol, summoning sickness still applies: a creature has to survive a turn cycle (or arrive with haste) before it can point its mill at a player, so the engine wants bodies already in place rather than a flood of fresh entrants. The devotion gate is the cost. Until seven blue and black pips sit on your board, this is an indestructible enchantment that hands out the ability without swinging itself, and the cost front-loads enough toward that threshold that the creature half often comes online a turn later. That separation is deliberate: the ability is what you are buying, and the 4/7 body is the reward for committing to the colors. Mill stops being slow inevitability and becomes a repeatable, instant-speed resource you can aim at any player.
