The doubled X is the whole mechanism. Where most scaling green sorceries buy one effect with X, this one splits the scaling across two axes that would each justify a card on their own: the destroy clause reads X, but the token clause reads twice X, so every point of investment past the artifact or enchantment you needed to answer converts into two bodies rather than one. That imbalance is deliberate. It lets the card function as pure removal when X is small and you only care about the destroy half, then tips into a board-flooding payoff the moment you have the mana to overshoot, and the tokens arriving with a lifegain-on-death rider means the swarm feeds sacrifice and aristocrat engines as readily as it attacks. The friction is the template itself: you pay the X twice on the front end, so the ceiling is real mana rather than a token discount, and the destroy targets have to exist for that half to matter. What you are actually buying is flexibility about which half you emphasize on a given turn, and green rarely gets to pair open-ended artifact and enchantment removal with a token engine in the same slot; usually those live in separate cards and separate colors. The Pest type ties it to a small green-black lineage of tokens that want to die, and here that lineage is generated by the same spell that clears the way for them.
