Rats have always been the tribe built on quantity, and this one wires two of black aristocrat design's oldest instincts together: the swarm payoff and the recursive attacker. The +1/+0 per other Rat is the payoff every wide black deck wants, turning a fragile 3/1 into a real threat as the board fills. But the graveyard clause is where the card earns its name. Most self-returning creatures ask for a full recast or a sacrifice loop; this one folds the recursion into the attack step itself, so once seven cards have piled up in the yard, every swing that includes a Rat offers to buy it back tapped and attacking for . That timing is the whole trick. It comes down as an extra body mid-combat rather than a sorcery-speed rebuild, meaning it adds to the Rat count and grows off your other swarmers the moment it returns, and it dodges the sweeper-and-resolve tempo tax that hobbles most reanimation. The 3/1 frame is the honest cost: it dies to everything, but dying is the setup, not the failure. A one-toughness body that trades early, fills the graveyard, and then keeps clawing back is doing exactly what a Rat Berserker should. Threshold as a mechanic is decades old, but stapling it to a combat trigger rather than a static bonus is the wrinkle that makes this a grind-it-out engine instead of a flat threshold reward.
