Perplex
A counterspell whose more interesting mode is never being cast as one. As a counter, it forces a choice between losing the spell and dumping the rest of a hand: brutal against a combo turn or a control player sitting on resources, dead against a topdecked threat with nothing behind it. But the transmute cost reframes the slot entirely. Discard it during your main phase and it fetches any three-mana card in your deck, which means the maindeck copy is really a hidden toolbox: a reactive answer when you draw it into an open window, a tutor for the exact three-drop you need when you draw it into a wall. Two constraints keep this from running away. The search is locked to cards of the same mana value, so you are only ever fetching three-cost cards, and the tutor mode resolves at sorcery speed, committing you in advance rather than at the moment of crisis. This was an early experiment in making a single card behave as two cards without printing modal text across its face: the alternative is folded into an activated ability that asks you to throw the card away to find a better one. The rate is wrong if you grade it as a pure counter and wrong if you grade it as a pure tutor; it reads correctly only as a card that becomes whichever of the two the board state demands.
