Pentarch Ward

Protection is the most layered keyword in the game's combat math, and stapling it to an Aura turns one white enchantment into a tunable wrench. Choose a color as it enters, and the host can become an attacker that color cannot block, a creature that color cannot target or damage, or a blocker that walks through a key threat untouched. Because the color is locked in on resolution and the Aura persists, the same card reads as offense or defense depending only on what the board needed when you cast it. There is no flash here, though: this is sorcery-speed setup, not a combat trick, so it answers a board you can already see rather than reacting after the fact. The clause that earns its place is the self-referential one. Protection from a color normally sloughs off Auras of that color, which would unhook this enchantment from its own host the moment you named, say, white. The text carves itself out so the Aura survives its own grant. Note the precision of the wording: it protects only this Aura, so any other enchantments of the chosen color still fall off the creature. That single exception is the price of the keyword's reach. The replacement cantrip cushions everything else, returning the card you spent so that even a misread on the color choice never bleeds raw card economy.
