Pendrell Drake

Creature — Drake3 generic manaBlue mana

Cycling's whole pitch lives in cards like this: a body you can keep when the board wants a flyer, or a card you can trade away when it doesn't. The mechanic arrived early as a way to smooth variance, and the flying-plus-cycling shell is the cleanest illustration of why the keyword worked. The drake is never embarrassing on the battlefield, but its real value is that it never sits dead in hand. Cycling collapses the usual tension between a creature's floor and its flexibility: instead of holding a mediocre four-drop hoping the game state turns it relevant, you spend two mana to convert it into whatever the top of your library offers. That conversion isn't free, though: two mana plus the card itself, and the redraw is random rather than selective. You don't get to cash in for nothing, which is exactly what stops the option from being strictly better than just running a spell. What the design proved is that a modest creature can earn deck slots not by being good but by being two cards in one, a floor and a replacement. The keyword would go on to anchor entire archetypes built around discarding and recurring cyclers, but the principle starts with unassuming flyers like this one, where the choice between casting and cycling is the entire point.
