Pariah's Shield

Pure damage redirection, with only an equip cost besides, and that purity is exactly what makes it a combo piece rather than a defensive tool. Equip it to a creature that cannot die from the damage it receives and you become invulnerable: an indestructible blocker, a regenerating wall, a body whose toughness shrugs off whatever the table throws. The redirection swallows everything dealt to you: burn, combat, and the symmetrical damage your own board generates. That last point is where the engine lives. Bolt it onto a creature that turns the redirected damage into a payoff, or onto an indestructible body, and the Shield stops being a way to survive and becomes a way to win or to feed another loop. The price is the honest counterweight: a colorless artifact open to any color of deck, but five to cast and three to equip means it demands a heavy mana investment before it protects you, and a removal spell on the equipped creature drops every hit straight back onto you. This is redirect-and-protect equipment whose ceiling is set entirely by what you bolt it onto rather than by anything printed on the card itself. The art and name lean into the martyr fantasy: someone is taking the blow for you, and the deckbuilding question is who, and whether they can survive it.
