Pact of Negation

Free is never free; the Pact cycle is built on borrowing power against your own future, and this is the one that protects a turn that matters more than the bill. Counter anything with zero mana down, then settle up five mana on your next upkeep or simply lose. The reason it earns a slot over a conventional counterspell is the timing window it carves out: it lets a combo deck tap out for its kill, leave the entire board unguarded, and still hold a hard answer to the opponent's disruption or their own win-now spell on the stack. You are not paying mana to be safe; you are paying with a turn you intend never to reach, because the plan is to win before your upkeep arrives. That is the wrinkle that makes it a combo-protection piece rather than a control tool: in a deck that expects to play another turn, the comes due at the start of your next upkeep, before you have even drawn for the turn, and it has to be paid before you can sequence anything. The card punishes the patient and rewards the suicidal, which is exactly the design intent. Force of Negation later offered free interaction with a softer cost (exiling a card rather than mortgaging your life), but the Pact keeps its niche by being unconditional: any spell, no exile tax, no restriction to noncreature targets, just a debt you are betting your life you will never have to pay.
