Ozai's Cruelty

Sorcery — Lesson2 generic manaBlack mana

Two effects that rarely share a card: reach damage aimed at the face and a two-card hand tax. Discard spells usually leave the opponent's life total alone, and burn spells usually leave the hand alone, because stapling both onto one card risks a rate that does too much for its cost. The compromise here is directional: the damage can only point at a player, never a creature, which keeps this off the ledger as a removal spell and defines it strictly as a resource-attrition and reach tool. That restriction forces the card into a specific role rather than letting it flex as generic interaction. The discard leaves the choice with the opponent, so it is worst against an empty hand and best against a hoarder sitting on answers, taxing exactly the player who has the most to lose. What reframes the card is its type line: a Lesson can be fetched from outside the game by Learn effects rather than drawn organically, so it becomes a tutorable piece of reach held back until the board state calls for exactly a hand-and-face punch. That is the design logic behind pairing two mediocre halves on one sorcery: neither the two lost cards nor the two points of clock justifies a maindeck slot on its own, but as an on-demand answer summoned into a grinding attrition game, the two effects compound over the turns a slow game hands you.
