Overwhelming Forces

Black has always paid for its wraths in something other than mana: a sacrifice, a corruption clause, a body left standing on the other side of the table. Here the price is the eight-mana sticker itself, and what it buys is the rare one-sided sweep that turns the cleanup into card advantage. Most board wipes are a defensive reset; you cast them when you are behind, accept that your own creatures die too, and hope to rebuild faster. This one is asymmetrical by targeting a single opponent, then converts each corpse into a fresh card, so the more developed the board it answers, the deeper it refills your hand. That inverts the usual sweeper math, where the player casting the wrath is trading down on cards to stabilize on the battlefield. The eight mana is doing the balancing work that a downside clause does elsewhere: the effect would be plainly broken at four or five, so the cost is set high enough that you have to earn it, reaching the back half of a long game before it comes online. It is less a panic button than a payoff, a sorcery you build a deck around rather than splash for insurance, and a reminder that black's color pie has always included pure board annihilation when you are willing to overpay for it.
