Oubliette

Enchantment1 generic manaBlack manaBlack mana

Phasing as a templating retrofit is the story here. The original printing did the work the long way: a bespoke removal-zone the creature sat in, untapping and triggering as though it were on the battlefield, with auras and equipment held alongside it, and the whole apparatus collapsing back into play when the enchantment died. It was one of the most rules-dense cards in the early game, and it sat broken or near-broken through multiple rules overhauls because no general mechanic existed to express what it was trying to do. The modern oracle is a quiet act of engineering: phasing, a mechanic invented years later for Mirage, turned out to be the exact primitive Oubliette had been reaching for in 1993. Phase the creature out, drag its attachments with it, tap it on the way back in. The card now reads in four lines what used to require a paragraph and a judge. What makes it remarkable is that the retrofit preserves the original interactions almost perfectly: the creature is gone for removal purposes but not exiled, its auras and equipment survive, and destroying the enchantment is the release valve. A black removal spell that hides a creature instead of killing it, written first as an exception and rewritten later as an application of a general rule. The design lesson is older than the mechanic: sometimes a card is waiting for the vocabulary to catch up to it.

When this enchantment enters, target creature phases out until this enchantment leaves the battlefield. Tap that creature as it phases in this way. (Auras and Equipment phase out with it. While permanents are phased out, they're treated as though they don't exist.)
